Message by SRSG, Ad Melkert, on the occasion of Eid ul-fitr

Baghdad, 10 September 2010: On the occasion of the Muslim Eid ul-Fitr that marks the end of the Holy month of Ramadan and on behalf of the United Nations in Iraq, I would like to extend my best wishes to both the people and Government of Iraq.
On this Eid, the orphaned children, widowed wives and all those who lost a loved one to acts of violence, including during the Holy month of Ramadan, will be on our minds. The Iraqi people who endured a long suffering needs peace and security to be fully restored and be freed from fear and want. The United Nations will do its best to assist you in achieving this goal
I sincerely hope that the ongoing efforts of the Iraqi leaders succeed in expediting agreement on the formation of an inclusive government that can effectively ensure democracy the safety and prosperity of the Iraqi people.
