UNAMI welcomes Iraqi president’s call for reform of the justice system

Reform of the justice system and expediting procedures and the release of prisoners who have completed their sentences or whose convictions have been overturned by the Court of Cassation, as well as addressing the conditions in prisons, as stated by H.E. the President of the Republic Mr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid in his statement today, are all elements that strengthen the rule of law in Iraq. 

A justice system based on the rule of law, the respect for human rights and the principle of presumption of innocence until proven guilty enhances people's trust in national institutions and promotes a just society, based on the principles of equality and inclusivity, contributing to sustainable peace, security, and development.

UNAMI looks forward to the reform of the justice system that ensures justice for all. This is in line with UNAMI’s mandate to promote accountability, the protection of human rights and judicial and legal reform, with full respect for the sovereignty of Iraq and national ownership.
