Baghdad, Iraq, 03 October 2017 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Jan Kubis, expresses his deepest condolences on the passing of former President of Iraq and founder and leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Jalal Talabani, a historic symbol of Kurdish struggle for their rights, against dictatorship and for democracy, and a leading voice of moderation, dialogue, mutual understanding and respect in Iraq’s contemporary politics.
In response to questions asked about the referendum in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, the Spokesman said that the Secretary-General notes that the referendum was unilaterally declared, included disputed areas under the control of the Peshmerga, and was opposed by the Iraqi constitutional authorities, Iraq's neighbors, and the international community.
