UNAMI Human Rights Office holds 3x3 Film Festival in Kirkuk

Kirkuk Cultural Centre, Kirkuk City, 30 April 2019: 75 men and women from Turkmen, Kurdish, Arab, Christian, Kakai, Shia and Sunni communities, including members of civil society, government, youth, tribal and religious leaders, human rights defenders, academics and artists, including film directors, joined UN Human Rights to celebrate the minorities and human rights film festival in Kirkuk.

Participants saw powerful short films made by Iraqis on human rights concerns in Iraq including enforced disappearances, forced marriage, violence against women and children, displacement, rights of minorities and the impact of corruption on human rights such as freedom of expression and the right to life.

The films generated a vibrant discussion on women’s rights, access to education, freedom of expression, the exodus of minorities from Iraq, and the rights of the marginalized and displaced. Once again, “Cinderella” was chosen by the audience as the best film. UN Human Rights is screening the short films across Iraq. The next minorities and human rights film festivals will be held in Salah al-Din, Kerbela, Diyala, Wassit, Qadissiya and Ninewa governorates.
