Message from the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Ján Kubiš, to the people of Kurdistan Region, and Iraqis more widely, on the occasion of Nowruz

Nowruz is an occasion to proudly celebrate culture and identity. It is a testament to Iraq’s vibrant diversity.

This year, this day of renewal and hope serves to celebrate the victory against Daesh but also to remember the sacrifices and challenges of Iraq and its people including the people of the Kurdistan Region. Their determination, perseverance and foremost unity has resulted in this historic victory over the terrorist group. We remember those members of the Peshmerga and other segments of security forces and civilians, who were martyred or injured in the conflict. We commiserate with those who have been displaced.

Nowruz also provides an opportunity to mobilize all efforts for better future in safety, security, dignity, equality, unity and prosperity. All people of Iraq share the same destiny. With the opening of the airports in Erbil and Sulaymania for international traffic and the start of paying salaries in the Kurdistan Region by the Federal authorities, the Federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government chose to make a fresh start and a new beginning in their relations through partnership and cooperation on the basis of the Constitution. The upcoming elections will serve to revitalize representation and democracy. This is one opportunity for all to make their voice heard, an opportunity that should not be missed.
