Kubiš Condemns Cowardly Baghdad Bombing: Despite Pain and Agony, Iraqis Will Triumph Over Terrorism

Baghdad, 03 July 2016 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Ján Kubiš, strongly condemns the “cowardly and heinous” terrorist bombing in Baghdad’s crowded central Karada district in the early hours of Sunday 03 July 2016 in which scores of civilians were killed or injured.
The SRSG expresses condolences to the families of the dead and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.
“This is a cowardly and heinous act of unparalleled proportions, to target peaceful civilians in the closing days of the holy month of Ramadan including shoppers preparing for the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday. This shows Daesh’s wanton intentions to kill, maim and demoralize”, Mr. Kubiš.
The SRSG calls on authorities to pursue the perpetrators of this atrocity and those behind them and bring them to justice. He urges the Government of Iraq to redouble its security efforts to ensure the people of Baghdad and the rest of Iraq celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday later this week in peace and safety.
“The terrorists of Daesh who have suffered defeats at the battlefront are seeking to avenge their losses by targeting vulnerable civilians”, Mr. Kubiš said. “Despite the pain and agony the Iraqi people will not surrender to the designs of those terrorists, will continue to reject their ways through displaying steadfast national unity and will eventually triumph”.
